How to Build Online Sections

There are four modalities of instruction:

Online instruction may be asynchronous, synchronous, or bichronous.

  • Asynchronous

Online instruction, no scheduled days/times

  • Synchronous

Online instruction, scheduled days/times

  • Bichronous

Online instruction, combination of asynchronous and synchronous delivery

 

To determine whether a Mostly Online class is APDB Learning Mode 03/04/11 or 05/06, consider whether the in-person meetings are non-instructional or instructional. Per IPEDS, non-instructional meeting examples include: orientation, testing, academic support, practicum, residency, internship, etc.

 

IMPORTANT:
Run this MyQuery called “Learning Mode and Space Type” to verify that these two fields are accurate before the schedule goes live.

To update the APDB Learning Mode:

  1. In Maintain Schedule of Classes, go to the Meetings tab.
  2. Click on Class APDB Mapping Values.
  3. Update the APDB Learning Mode to the appropriate value.
  4. DO NOT CHANGE ANY OTHER FIELD. The other fields are pre-populated based on the default settings for the course. Changes to the default course settings must be made through Curriculog.

To update the Space Type:

1. Click on Meeting APDB Mapping Values
2. Determine the correct space type based on the Component.

Component and space type

Supervision 3 - Non-Capacity

3. Regardless of the Component, if the Facility ID is WEB, pick 3 Non-Capacity

Course instruction is predominantly online.  50% or more of the class time is online.

APDB Mode 03, 04, and 11:

  • Predominantly online, includes non-instructional in-person meetings
    (e.g., orientation, midterms, exams) that are listed on specific dates.
  • 03 is asynchronous. 04 is synchronous.  11 is bichronous.

APDB Mode 05 and 06:

  • Predominantly online, includes instructional in-person meetings.
  • 05 is asynchronous. 06 is synchronous.

  • Set Instruction Mode to N.

  2. The last meeting pattern is WEB/ASYN.
  3. If the instructor is added to all meeting patterns, set all to Approve.
  4. Workload tab: must select IFF on the first meeting pattern. Set the rest to Not Include.
  5. Click into Class APDB Mapping Values. Set APDB Learning Mode to 03.
  6. Meeting APDB Mapping Values:
    1. For the in-person meeting pattern(s), select the Space Type based on the Component.
    2. For the online meeting pattern, set Space Type to 3 – Noncapacity.

APDB Learning Mode 06:  Synchronous with Instructional In-Person Meetings

Mostly In-Person (Hybrid)

Course Instruction is predominantly in-person. Less than 50% of the class time is online.

  • Set Instruction Mode to H.

  1. Pattern can only be TBA when the Facility ID is blank.
  2. Click into Class APDB Mapping Values. Set APDB Learning Mode to 09.
