who are planning to take Mathematics 130 A Short Course in Calculus, Mathematics 135 Business Calculus or Mathematics 150A Calculus 1 must complete four ALEKS PPL assessments and obtain an appropriate score on the fourth assessment. Access to ALEKS PPL can be obtained from the ALEKS icon or link in your student portal.

All other students (including all international, first-time freshmen), who plan to enroll in Mathematics 130 A Short Course in Calculus, Mathematics 135 Business Calculus or Mathematics 150A Calculus 1 must take the Mathematics Qualifying Exam (MQE) or have a department approved exception. No student will be enrolled in these mathematics courses unless they have already passed the MQE or are exempt. The examination scores are valid for two consecutive semesters. You must pass the MQE or be exempt before you can register for any of the above courses.

To be exempt from the MQE, students must have:

  • For MATH 130 & 135
    A "C" or better in MATH 115 or 125 at CSUF or in
    an equivalent course from another college.
  • For MATH 150A
    A "C" or better in MATH 125 at CSUF or in an
    equivalent course.

If you have taken an equivalent math course at another college, you must submit an unofficial copy of your transcript or course grade, a course description and a course syllabus to the Mathematics Department prior to registering for classes.

The MQE is administered through ProctorU, an online service that monitors participants while they take the MQE to ensure that academic integrity is maintained. Please contact the Mathematics Department at mathoffice@fullerton.eduOpens in new window to be added to the inquiry list for test date information. Once the test date is available, you will be notified via email with instruction on how to register for the test through your free ProctorU account, which can be created at go.proctoru.comOpens in new window . Upon registering for the exam, you will be prompted to pay a proctoring fee of $19.75. Late registrants will need to pay an additional premium scheduling fee on top of the proctoring cost. If you schedule the exam 24-72 hours before the test, an additional $5.00 scheduling fee will be added. If you schedule the exam 24 hours or less before the test, an additional $8.75 schedule fee will be added.
