ESE 101P - Preparatory College Writing

(all sections offered virtually in Summer 2021)

Prerequisite: Students who are required to participate in the Early Start Program for Written Communication. Eligibility determined by appropriate placement assessment. Open to eligible Home and Host students. Practice and instruction in college-level writing. Writing, revision, grammar, rhetorical and research skills necessary for success in ENGL 101.

ESE 100/100W - Analytical College Writing/Writing Workshop

(all sections offered virtually in Summer 2021)

Prerequisite: Students who are recommended, but not required, to participate in the Early Start Program for Written Communication and ready to enroll in a course that meets the GE Written Communication requirement. Open to eligible Home and Host students.  Students will learn to express ideas effectively in well-developed, focused essays that support arguments with relevant and adequate evidence, and use the style and conventions of standard academic prose. Co-requisite ESE 100W includes workshop/lab/tutorial activities, which seeks to improve students’ ability to compose analytical college essays. Students who are eligible for but do not complete ESE 100/100W must complete either ESE 101P or ENGL 101P before enrolling in ENGL 101.

Math Courses

ESM 110/10S - Mathematics for Liberal Arts Students and Supplement

(all sections offered virtually in Summer 2021)

Prerequisite: This class is designed for non-STEM or Undeclared students. It is open to both Home and Host students who are required to participate in the Early Start Program for math based on multiple measures placement standards. The class is taught in a corequisite model, with 3 units of college credit and 1 unit of non-degree credit support. This class, if passed with a C- or higher, satisfies the GE Math requirement. The three-unit class covers the survey of traditional and contemporary topics in mathematics, such as elementary logic, counting techniques, probability, statistics, and the mathematics of the social sciences. The one-unit supplemental class will cover the order of operations, calculator functions, fractions, percent, linear equations, inequalities, quadratics, exponential and logarithmic functions, sequences and series.

ESM 115A - College Algebra (A)

(all sections offered virtually in Summer 2021)

Prerequisite: This class is designed for students who are either recommended or required to participate in the Early Start Program for math based on multiple measures placement standards.  It is open to both Home and Host students.  It is the first class of a two-class sequence for students planning to take calculus who are not MATH/QR ready. This class, if passed with a C- or higher, satisfies the GE Math requirement. The class covers linear and quadratic equations with additional focus on foundation-level mathematics to support algebraic properties of linear and quadratic functions, graphs and applications.

ESM 120/20S - Elementary Statistics and Supplement 

(all sections offered virtually in Summer 2021)

Prerequisite: This class is designed for non-STEM students.  It is open to both Home and Host students who are required to participate in the Early Start Program for math based on multiple measures placement standards. The class is taught in a corequisite model, with 3 units of college credit and up to 1 unit of non-degree credit support. This class, if passed with a C- or higher, satisfies the GE Math requirement. The three-unit class covers set algebra, finite probability models, sampling, binomial trials, conditional probability and expectation. The one-unit supplemental class will cover the order of operations, mathematical expressions and functions. Also covered will be conversion between fractions, proportions, decimals, percentages and probabilities. Average rate of change, equation of a line and intersection of two lines. Mathematical and statistical word problems. Data entry and use of statistical software.
